The results of VTB Kremlin Cup-2021 draw ceremony

The results of VTB Kremlin Cup-2021 draw ceremony

October 16, 03:00 PM

The draw ceremony of the VTB Kremlin Cup-2021 tournament was held on October 16 at the Irina Viner-Usmanova Gymnastics Palace. The draw determined the pairs of competitors in both the men’s and the women’s events.

According to Alexey Selivanenko, director of the women's tournament of VTB Kremlin Cup-2021, the draw is well-balanced. He admitted that the place the Moscow tournament holds in the calendar right after the “Masters” in Indian-Wells leaves room for adjustments, because it is too tough for athletes to acclimatize and recover after a long flight. For the same reason, there are daily changes in the players’ draw: some of them withdraw, some others, on the contrary, join the tournament like, for instance, Arina Sabalenka who received a wild card.

Selivanenko also paid attention to the fact that there will be not four but rather more (six) players coming off the qualifications because of two «lucky losers». According to the director of the women's tournament, the central match will feature two-time Grand Slam winner Simona Halep against two-time WTA tournament winner Anastasia Potapova. The duel between two rising stars of world tennis Elena Rybakina and finalist of "Roland Garros-2019" Marketa Vondrouseva will be very fascinating. The match in which Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova will face tennis the player from Tunisia Ons Jaber, runner-up of the VTB Kremlin Cup 2018 who has recently been showing excellent tennis, will also attract attention. «In general, I think every match will be interesting, and there will be something to see every day», - concluded Selivanenko.

The director of the men's tournament Amir Tarpischev noted: «I would like to start with the fact that tonight Karatsev and Rublev are playing the doubles finals at the tournament in Indian Wells. And it will be quite difficult for them to acclimatize upon arrival and quickly prepare for the VTB Kremlin Cup tournament. But we hope that they will win the final, their mood will be positive, and they will be able to reach their optimal level if they pass the first rounds».

Amir Tarpischev also commented on the men's draw of the tournament: «I see that Rublev in his first match may get as a competitor wild card holder Roman Safiullin or Adrian Mannarino, whom he played in the Kremlin Cup 2019 finals. I think, overall Rublev will be able to play quite well at the tournament. A little later, he may get to play the American Tommy Paul to whom he lost in singles at Indian Wells, or may square off with the Croatian Marin Cilic – Tommy Paul and Marin Cilic will determine who of them will play against Rublev. As for our other athletes who received a wild card, Alibek Kachmazov will play against Federico Koria in the first round. This match for Alibek is probably the best that could be imagined for a wild card holder. I don't want to offend Koria, but it seems to me that Alibek can go farther. For Evgeny Donskoy the match against Ilya Ivashka will be difficult, but quite interesting. Karen Khachanov also has a tough draw: he may face Duckworth and then Bublik. The matches will definitely be exciting. Aslan Karatsev is likely to face in his opening match Miomir Kecmanovic who is now playing some good tennis. I think that almost all the matches at the tournament will be very competitive and thrilling».
