Elena Vesnina: «I was dreaming to play on the «VTB Kremlin Cup» Central сourt in my childhood»

Elena Vesnina: «I was dreaming to play on the «VTB Kremlin Cup» Central сourt in my childhood»

October 13, 09:15 PM

Elena Vesnina, Olympic doubles champion, №19 WTA Ranking in singles, told press-service about her best performances, plans for the future and commented on the new surface of the “VTB Kremlin Cup”

-Elena, we are glad to see you on the Сentral court of “VTB Kremlin Cup”. You are in top 20 WTA Rankings and №3 in doubles and have had an amazing season this year. You showed good results at Grand Slam tournaments especially a lot of joy was brought for the fans by your success in doubles final at Wimbledon. What’s your personal opinion about it? How can you sum it up?

- Actually the season was very successful, and I’m glad how I have performed. Of course you always want to get more, want to win every tournament. It’s very complicated to realize because the season is so long. I’m so happy to come back to the courts of “Olympic Stadium” and to one of my favorite tournaments “VTB Kremlin Cup”. I would like play a good game here and to show a worthwhile result in the end of the year.

Will the fans see Olympic champions Vesnina - Makarova in doubles this year?

Unfortunately, no. We had a very hard and long season, we are really tired and we decided to save energy before the main championship in Singapore and to give our all in singles. I hope we will make our fans happy with our performance.

Nowadays a lot of young players are in a tour. In your opinion who is the most perspective one?

I would like to figure Dasha Kasatkina out of them. She approved herself and showed really good results. She has already won her first WTA event at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston.

Also I would like to mention Anna Blinkova, Nastya Potapova and Olesya Pervushina. Many of the young players make their first steps in the tour, they have most of their victories ahead but already assert themselves as good players.

You have already tried to play on the new surface. How do you like it?

I like the new surface of “VTB Kremlin Cup”. Frankly speaking I like these courts more than those of the last year. The bounce is lower and it goes smoothly, better than it was before.

We’ll see how I will play this time here. But in general I’m satisfied with my first day practice at Olympic Stadium, I will continue to work harder.

Also you have changed you racket for a new white Babolat Strike. Have you felt any changes?

I’ve been playing with this racket for a year already. I like how it looks like, what is extremely important for girls (laughing). And, of course, for me as for a professional tennis player it’s essential that it should be made from the high quality materials. My racket Babolat Strike absolutely meets my requirements.

Who helps you nowadays in your preparation for the tournament?

Andrey Chesnokov, my coach, does it. We worked together during the WTA Asian series in Wuhan and Beijing. Also my fitness coach Irina Kiseleva does a great job. And my father is coming tomorrow to join our team.

How does Andrey who had amazing matches during his professional career get you up for the game?

He is always in a good mood and he can easily take the heat off. We have been working with him for 7-8 years; he knows me very well and knows how to get me up for the tournament.

What feelings and association do you have with “VTB Kremlin Cup”?

Moscow tournament always evokes only good memories from my childhood, when I was watching the games of the outstanding players and dreamt to come one day on the central court. It’s a tournament not only with Russian but also with world tennis history. The greatest win the titles here. I always come here and try to do my best playing in front of the fans, relatives and friends. And it’s difficult, cause when you want something very strong it rarely happens easily. It’s important to find a balance in your performance, to make your shape and willingness merge in one and to strike a happy medium.

Which tournaments are the most successful in your career?

First of all it’s Olympic gold in Rio, my title in Indian Wells this year, Master’s series tournament, which is one of the most prestigious and it will stay in my heart forever. Moreover it’s a triumph on Grand Slam tournaments – Wimbledon, Roland Garros, US Open. And one more single title that I got in Eastbourne. It wasn’t easy to win due to the draw.

What are your plans after the end of your career?

I am working hard on opening the tennis academy named after me in Sochi, my home town. We have had several meetings with the mayor of Sochi Anatoly Pakhomov. Now we are negotiating about the land within the city limits where the courts can be built as well as the gym and the pool to practice and prepare for the season. The representatives of different sports are still visiting Sochi in order to prepare for the competitions. The weather conditions are appropriate for training during the whole year. Climate is softer than in Moscow and all other cities around Russia. I’d like tennis traditions to be continued in Sochi. Moreover I hope Sochi will help us to grow up new champions and help the whole country to bring tennis to the higher level.
