Elena Vesnina: «I will definitely read Maria Sharapova’s book»

Elena Vesnina: «I will definitely read Maria Sharapova’s book»

October 16, 03:15 PM

You requested a wild card in Hong Kong. Why did it happen this way? Aren’t you planning everything beforehand? Did you change your plans at the 11th hour?

It didn’t happen on purpose, I just forgot to enter the tournament (laughter). The tournament was in my schedule, I made an arrangement with the organizers that I’d come, I just forgot to sign up.

Do you plan to play in Zhuhai?

I think I will go to Zhuhai, I will fly there right after Singapore.

One more question about Hong Kong: I had an impression the conditions there were terrible, a high humidity level, how did you feel in these conditions?

I came in late after Beijing, those were completely different conditions: dry and cold in Beijing, and 35 degrees in Hong Kong, I couldn't adjust well and it was tough. Gradually your body adapts to the heat but I didn’t have any time to adapt. The girl I was playing showed a very good level of tennis and I didn’t really understand where I were.

Is it true you had a sun stroke?

Yes, that’s what I was told. And after that I won the title (laughing).

We remember all those words you said to defend Maria Sharapova when a campaign against her was launched. Did you have a chance to go through her book and do you plan to publish your own biography?

I have a copy of the book, I will definitely read it, I also read biographies of other tennis players. I didn’t think about my own book yet but it could be an interesting experience. I’d have to give it some thoughts and see what I want to share with my fans: if it has to be interesting, you have to share something private, I am not sure I can do it.

Is the fact that you didn’t have your best season this year related to the fact you lost your motivation?

No, I didn’t lose my motivation. It was a tough season, a long one, you don’t always go on court being in your best form. In women’s tennis you lose your confidence so fast, you think you’ve just won a Masters or a Grand Slam, but you always have this tiredness and pressure, it is not so easy.

What are your feeling about the fact that you have a bye for the second year in a row?

It’s nice, but it also adds extra pressure.

You mentioned Vera Zvonareva, everybody was hoping she would compete here. Do you happen to know what happened with her?

I saw her a couple of times at the CSKA (Moscow Red Army Club) courts, she was preparing for tournaments. A far as I know she got sick.

Svetlana Kuznetsova was considered to be a resident of Saint Petersburg. But recently she set herself in Moscow and now is considered more of a Moscow resident. Are you still loyal to Sochi or did you get a home in Moscow?

For me Sochi still remains the best city on Earth but I did get a home for me in Moscow as I spend a lot of time here because it is easier to travel to tournaments from Moscow. And there are a lot of our girls practicing here.
