Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova: «I decided to try play in Moscow and give it my best shot»

October 17, 08:45 PM

One day wasn’t enough for you to recover, was it?

Of course, it wasn’t. I even had doubts whether I should play or not (in Moscow). But since I’m in Moscow and I don’t have injuries, I decided to try my best. But it’s not just about recovering, it was really hard for me to adapt to new balls, to a new surface, to a different weather. I was upset that when I was serving for the set when I was 6:5 up, I couldn’t take this chance.

Did you have a feeling that your opponent took advantage of your fatigue?

I told Daria (Kasatkina) in the locker room when we talked that she played well today - almost flawlessly. Moreover she mixed her game with drop shots, slices and spins. So she did everything to make me feel uncomfortable. It was efficient especially on this specific surface.

You have just returned from Hong Kong. Can we say that final in Hong Kong was the most dramatic match in your career?

Yes, the final siphoned off all my energy. We were not going to play because of the 8.0 on the Richter scale typhoon. At the last moment when I’be just begun to eat, they told me to take to the court.

Can you sum up your season? Looks it’s pretty much the same thing…

The last year I finished №28 in WTA rankings, this year I’m №14. I believe it’s the same thing…

Was it a joke?

Rather sarcasm (smiling)

This year was successful for you. Is it difficult for you as an experienced player to raise your game even more?

Yes, this season was a good one. However the middle of it with Roland Garros and Wimbledon was not brilliant. I always want to achieve better results but I should work harder and train more.

Do you feel comfortable with your coach during on-court training?

When he comes, he always wants to pass onto me some positive emotions, to have fun. I’m always a bit depressed and I am a high strung so he tries to make me laugh.

How much energy did your flight from Eastern Asia take? How is your acclimatization going? Do you have some tips as top how best to adapt to the new conditions?

Any adaptation is difficult after all the tournaments that have played. But we are all in the same conditions so I try not to think about it. I don’t have my own tips as to how best recover after jetlag. So, yesterday I arrived at 5 pm and I had just some time to sleep and relax.
