How was your first match?

The first set went fine, then it got a bit nervous and Polina [Monova] started to play well. I was up 2/0, then I loosened up a bit and when I began losing, I finally composed myself. The second set was a roller coaster. But I ended up winning and that’s all that matters. If I could win with the kind of game I played in the second set, then everything is fine.

You already took part in the «VTB Kremlin Cup» and reached the semifinals last year. What memories do you have from this tournament?

In general, I have good memories from last year. At the same time, both good and not so good because of my wrist injury. I was pleased with the results, with the way I finished that year. I know that “VTB Kremlin Cup» is held for the last time at the stadium «Olimpiyskiy». I have played here not so many times, just four times, actually, including two in qualifications, but for me playing at a tournament with such rich history means a lot. I always watched it on TV. When you play, you participate in it, you realize that everything you’ve been dreaming of may come true.

Now you dropped out of the Top100 [№109]. Why?

Oh well, that’s the way it is. For someone it is important, they are counting points, trying to crack the Top100. I was 54th once. But this year I was struggling with injuries, I had overweight as a result. So now I'm trying not to get fixated on the fact that I am out of the Top100. Because no matter what your ranking is, if you play well, you can rise to any position after any match, it all depends on you, on the draw and on the players. Most of the matches I lost in the middle of the year, I lost them to players from the Top25. I cannot say that I was lost to someone ranked 150th or 180th, I usually beat them. I lost only to those who were ranked higher than me. Yes, I was in the Top100, I was 54th, and somebody even dreams of being 109th. Therefore, I try not to get fixated on it.

Where are you practicing now?

I practice at the Mouratoglou Academy and at the IMG Academy, and also in my native Volgograd sometimes.  I haven’t made up my mind yet as to what academy I am going to choose to train during the off-season, but I got invitations from many academies and now it’s up to me. I will find the right team that will support me, with whom I will train and win tournaments.

Do you have a preference for any of these places?

Mouratoglou Academy has a very good base and physical training, but tennis facilities and coaches are better at IMG. If only we could have it all in one (laughter). But so far I haven’t decided yet.

What are your plans for the next season?

I expected more from this year, it didn’t work too well for me. Therefore next year I just want to prepare well, start well, enter the right tournaments and return to the ranking I used to have - 54th, and from there it is pretty close to the Top50.

Have you already received an offer from the new coach of the Russian Fed Cup team Igor Andreev to play for the team again?

I played in Khanty-Mansiysk in April (after Latvia took an unassailable lead in the tie against Russia, Vikhlyantseva won the dead doubles rubber with Elena Vesnina) . But I haven’t received any offers yet. And really, I want to focus more on my individual tournaments, to regain my positions. There are many more promising players who can represent our country right now.
