«VTB Kremlin Cup 2018» Qualifications: Day 1

«VTB Kremlin Cup 2018» Qualifications: Day 1

October 13, 11:00 PM

Qualification matches of the 29th International tennis tournament «VTB Kremlin Cup» were played on October, 13 on the courts of “Olympiyskiy” sports complex. As was expected, spectators could watch long thrilling matches starting from the first QR.

The Russian Vera Zvonareva had a tough opening match as she managed to turn the tide and beat the Romanian Alexandra Cadantu in three sets 4/6, 6/1, 6/2 in 1 h 49 m. «I guess, I was making too many errors in the first set, I gave her an opportunity to play her game, but then I caught my own rhythm, played more aggressively, that’s why I turned the tide», former world № 2 commented on her victory.

The Russians Sofya Lansere and Olga Doroshina played a real thriller. The match that lasted virtually three hours was won by 18-year-old Lansere. As she mentioned in her post-match interview to the correspondent of the press service, the turning point was in the deciding set: «In the third set I was rushing things too much and I was down 0/2,- Lansere said. - But then I said to myself - this is my match, I have to win it! Because everything is within reach, everything is playable. I gritted my teeth, made my feet move, though my feet already felt sour, and I forced myself to put all the balls in the court. I have fixed my game».

This year, the two players have already clashed in a full-time duel at an ITF event - then Olga Doroshnia prevailed. This experience helped a lot the young Lansere who recently celebrated her 18th birthday: «I already knew her weaknesses, how to play against her. Plus, of course, the support of all my relatives, friends and coach helped me a lot». Lansere will now square off with her compatriot Vera Zvonareva: «It will be very interesting to play against her, because she was number 2 in the world. At the very least, it will be a good experience for me».

In another Russian derby experienced Evgeniya Rodina faced the young 18-year old Sofya Zhuk. Zhuk beat Rodina 6/3, 6/4. Sofya played more actively and served better, she had more total points won (25-13).

The Russians Vitalia Diatchenko and Irina Khromacheva sailed through R1 prevailing over Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) and Ekaterina Gorgodze (Georgia), respectively. Valentyna Ivakhnenko, Varvara Flink and Alexandra Panova were knocked out. Panova succumbed to the Greek Valentini Grammatikopoulou– 7/6(7), 4/6, 4/6. Last year’s semifinalist of the Moscow tournament Natalia Vikhlyantseva started well in qualifications as she clinched a victory over her compatriot Polina Monova 6/1, 7/6(3).

In the men’s qualifications tournament Teymuraz Gabashvili was the only Russian to win a spot in the main draw. In QR1 he outplayed the German Daniel Brands 6/4, 7/6(3), 6/3. The match lasted 2 h 26 m. His next round opponent will be the Belorussian Gerasimov who beat the Russian Alexey Vatutin.

The Russian Ivan Gakhov, champion of the Russian nationals 2018, didn’t oppose much resistance to the more experienced Czech Lucas Rosol, the 2nd seed of the quallies (3/6, 3/6). Two-time quarterfinalist of «VTB Kremlin Cup» (2016-2017) Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan in less than an hour cruised past the German Rudolf Molleker (6/2, 6/2). Last year’s runner-up Richardas Berankis from Lithuania rallied to beat Blaz Kavcic from Slovenia in three sets 6/4, 4/6, 7/5.
