Three winners of Slams to vie for title in Moscow

Three winners of Slams to vie for title in Moscow

September 18, 12:45 PM

The entry lists of players from VTB Kremlin Cup women's tournament main draw was unveiled on September 18.

Much to the delight of tennis fans they will have an opportunity to watch simultaneously three winners of Grand Slam tournaments: Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza, Petra Kvitova as well as Kremlin Cup reigning champion Daria Kasatkina. The list of other seeded players includes the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, currently ranked 3rd in world rankings. She showed great results at the US Open 2019 reaching her career first semifinals at this major. All in all, the lineup of VTB Kremlin Cup boasts 11 tennis players from the Top30.

The tournament board of directors chairman Shamil Tarpishchev noted: “This lineup is arguably one of the strongest in recent years as we have five Top20 players and four from the Top10 – that’s really superb, so we are poised to watch some great women’s tennis. Unfortunately for us, there are only four Russians in the main draw, but I think the generational change was a factor here. In any case, the tournament will be very interesting and meaningful for the fans, and tennis fans will flock to the stadium to watch outstanding tennis”.

The director of the women's tournament Alexey Selivanenko added: “The entry list speaks for itself: three winners of the Grand Slam tournaments, four tennis players from the Top10. It is especially pleasant that the winners of the Kremlin Cup past editions keep coming back. Of course, the lineup list is not final and may be subject to changes. As of today, we already know several players who may ask for WCs right before the tournament, including some famous names. In the first place we are talking about those who may need points before the year-end championships. We will not disclose names yet, but these are girls showing most impressive results this season”.

Four Russians - Ekaterina Alexandrova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Daria Kasatkina and Veronika Kudermetova - will compete in the main draw. In light of this Tarpischev said: “I would like Kasatkina to overcome all her worries and play with dignity at the jubilee tournament given that she is the defending champion.

We also expect Pavlyuchenkova who recovered from injuries to do well. I consider her one of the most talented tennis players who hasn’t really fulfilled her potential.

Surprisingly enough, Ekaterina Alexandrova is demonstrating very fast tennis, not coincidentally, she became Russia’s top player. We hope Kudermetova will have a good run as she’s been showing consistent game. We will watch our girls in action with keen interest bearing in mind that the Olympics will be held next year, so all ranking points count”.

Women's acceptance list

Background

“VTB Kremlin Cup” is the largest all-time competition in Russia, a tournament with very richtraditions, a world-class event. Nowhere else in the world both men and women compete simultaneously indoorswithin the same combined event which creates its own unique atmosphere at the stadium.

The first Russian champions were bornhere, the future stars of national and world tennis got their baptism of fire. It is precisely theRussians who scored the most victories in the tournament: out of 89 titles up for grabs (1990-2018), our tennis players won 41(23 in singles and 18 in doubles). For instance, in 2004 Nikolai Davydenko and Anastasia Myskina won both in singles and doubles. At the turn of the century, the men's tournament could be safely called “Kafelnikov Cup”–in 1997-2001 Evgenyclaimedfivetitles to become our absolute record holder.
