Kiki Bertens: «In the third set my service helped me!»

Kiki Bertens: «In the third set my service helped me!»

October 17, 05:45 PM

Kiki, congratulation on your win today in this three set thriller. The first question is traditionally about the match. What made the difference in the 1st and 2nd set and how did you manage to turn the tide after you were ¼ down in the 3rd?

It was a tough match. I was just pushing myself and then I just tried to play every point. The first set was really-really close so she was playing a little bit better than me on the important points. And I think also in the second set there were few points here and there but I was just trying to play aggressively. Then in the third set my service helped me, I guess.

The last time you met on court was back 2012, a while ago. Where you thinking about the match before today's one?

I knew that we played a long time ago and that I lost. For me it is just nice because with lots of girls you play many times during the year and I always like when you play someone you've played long ago. Of course, I knew how she is playing so we prepared a little bit to that but then I just went for my own play.

In the next round you will take on Kristina Mladenovic or Anastasija Sevastova, what are your thoughts and expectations from the match?

It's gonna be a tough match either way. I have to prepare as well as I can again and let the body heal a little bit. Let's see how I feel tomorrow and then just go for every point and just fight.

Year by year you were rising in your rankings, this season you reached the Top4. How does it fell to be amongst the four best players in the world?

It was an unbelievable feeling, because also it was straight after my win in Madrid, then also it was my career high and career high amongst Dutch female players. It was everything in one. So it was just really great I am just trying to continue like that I am still really happy that I am finishing this year in the Top10. I think, it is a great achievement. And I like I could do it the second year in a row. I am just really proud of our team so far.

Do people in Netherlands recognize you when you are walking on the street and did you have any cases when, for example, you were standing in line, then someone recognized you and let you go first?

Oh, no! It is not how it works in the Netherlands. Of course, they recognize you. But still I can do whatever I want, they just let me free. Of course, it happens they people recognize me, they know who I am.

In your WTA profile it is written that your coach is Raemon Sluiter but you came here with Elisa Tamaela, former WTA player. Are you working with both of them?

Yes, Elisa was already a part of our team as a physio. And with Raemon – we are still working together but he is not here. Again,we’ll just find a way (to work together) again after this tournament. So Elisa is taking over his job a little bit over the last two weeks but she was already part of the team, so it is not someone new.

What is the difference between them and maybe their thoughts about your tennis?

Not so much, I would say. Maybe Elisa is a little bit quieter. But I think that’s it. Because she has already been part of our team for the last year, she knows how we are working. She is a great person to have around. And I am glad she is helping me these weeks.

Every tennis player especially at the top level is thinking about winning a Grand Slam. What should you do to reach this goal, in your opinion?

Just play well for two weeks (smilling). Yes, it is easy and it is not so. And I think I have to believe I can do it because I won already big tournaments where top players are also playing. Grand Slam is something different. You have a day-off all the time. For two weeks you should stay focused all the time and we will try again next year and see how it goes.

Last year in November you announced your engagement but still we didn't see any wedding pictures...

Soon! (Laughter). We have the date, it is still gonna be this year but I am not gonna tell you what date it is.

Were you preparing the wedding gown and everything?

Yeah, we prepared everything but it was tough because I didn’t spend too many days at home over the last few months. But everything is well organized and I am looking forward to it.

In your Instagram you posted a couple of beautiful pictures from a photo shoot, are you collaborating with the clothing brand Gutsgusto?

Yes. We have a great collaboration. It is a nice brand that I am really like for off-court clothing. I did some photo shoots with them. I just really like the clothes and do something else outside tennis. So I am very happy with our partnership.

Sometimes it is really nice to have something different...

Yeah. People saw these great pictures and I think that it is really-really different part of me because I look there so different than on court because I don't do my make up, I don't do my hair. I am there for playing tennis. But it worth doing sometimes to take care of yourself and do something different.
