Matwe Middelkoop-Marcelo Demoliner: «We attract each other like a magnet!»

How do you feel about your victory? This is your first title together.

Matwe: It’s our fifth tournament together, I think. Our second final and our first win. The title confirms that we are great team. We have a great duo together. You are not often so lucky to win a title. At the end of the year it’s really nice to win the title.

Marcelo: Matwe said everything (laughter).

What was the toughest match or the toughest opponents of the tournament?

Matwe: Every match was tough, what question is this (laughter)?

Marcelo: Maybe the second one, because we lost to them [Romain Arneodo and Hugo Nys] earlier in France. So, we took revenge. I think that revenge was the key of the tournament.

Tell us about the final, it was so quick, how did you manage to win so fast?

Marcelo: We had a good plan for this match.

Matwe: He practices his things, I practice on my things, but we are a good duo together. In the second match against the guys from Monaco, who beat us earlier we told ourselves that we can do it, we can beat them, we have a good tactic. After that match we were cruising through the tournament. Actually, I’m looking forward to the next tournament together.

How is the leader in your duo?

Matwe: Both (laughter).

Marcelo: If one goes down, the other one takes the lead. We still need to know how to work with each other. We are working not too long together. But we are doing great. We won!

How did you begin to play together, because you started your partnership not so long ago?

Matwe: Marcelo asked me a lot of times: Matwe, let’s play, let’s play (laughter). I was playing with Wesley Kolhoof, Robin Haase, Roman Jebawy. I was mixing around. Marcelo had his own partnership. But then he asked, if I want to play and it was the perfect time. So, I said let’s go. And the plan was really clear. We just go for it. We both play different tennis, we have a different way to play doubles. But somehow, as magnet, we attract each other. If you see our matches, I’m on the base line, he is near the net. And we do our magic.

Matwe, this not your first time playing here in Moscow and, Marcelo, your first, did you like to play here?

Marcelo: I like Russia a lot. This is amazing city. It’s really clean, the people are great. We played in Saint Petersburg and I loved that city also. I think I’m playing good in Russia. The vibe is great.

Matwe, we know that your grandmother is from Russia, how did your Russian improve, how many new words have you learnt?

Matwe: I’m really shy, my Russian is not that good. I’m really lazy. I have to do my homework better. I understand 50-70% of what you say. But I have to force myself to learn it. Because my business is also in Russia. But I’m busy with tennis, you see, guys (laughter).

Marcelo, you got a picture from your fan here on the tournament, how does it feel to get such presents, such recognition?

Marcelo: It’s really nice. I was surprised that a Russian guy knows me.

Matwe: I saw a Brazilian flag on the stands!

You had a training session with Kiki Bertens here. How was it? With whom else did you train here?

Matwe: I only trained with Kiki. She is from my city, Breda. We are really good friends. I’m going to her marriage. She is a close friend of mine. She told me: 8.30 in the morning. I said: alright, let’s go (laughter).

And the most memorable training session, hitting partner ever?

Matwe: Rafael Nadal. That was really nice. I was so nervous. Nadal is such a good guy, he is so sweet. But it was really tough. I was exhausted. Because of the spin and it goes everywhere.

Marcelo: Del Potro. We are good friends. I look like him, we are like brothers. But I’m much more handsome (laughter). Don’t say it to Delpo (laughter).

Any plans for the next season? Do you plan to come the next year and to defend the title?

Matwe: Why not?

Marcelo: You know, the good thing is that Brazilians don’t need a visa to come to Russia (laughter).

Matwe: And I have a five-years visa (laughter). So, 500 percents.
