Andrey Rublev: «It is impossible to describe my feelings with words!»

Andrey Rublev: «It is impossible to describe my feelings with words!»

October 20, 08:00 PM

Adrian Mannarino won 4 games in last years’ final with Karen Khachanov, this year he also won only 4 games against you. Karen’s advice helped, didn’t it?

I don’t know, I didn’t plan that it will be like that. I don’t remember with what score Karen won (6/2, 6/2). I remember that it was pretty confident and easy, but I didn’t remember that he losе only 4 games. Karen, of course, gave me some advice. But it turned out as it turned out. Not every final can be played that smoothly.

Can you compare the victory at the VTB Kremlin Cup tournament and in the Croatian Umag, where you won your first title?

If you compare these two tournaments, I had completely different feelings. Umag was still my first title. And although this is not the first finals at all, this is the first finals at home. Quite different feelings in the end. Winning at home and abroad are two different feelings. But both victories are special for me.

Is this the best birthday you can think of?

On my birthday four years ago, I lost a match at the VTB Kremlin Cup tournament in the first round. If someone said four years ago that I would have won the tournament today, I would have immediately signed a contract.

When a packed stadium is chanting “Happy Birthday!”, is this the best gift?

It really touched me. It is impossible to describe my feelings with words.

How confident are you now? What are you capable of in the next two weeks and is it now your task to get into the Top20 by the end of the year?

As far as confidence is concerned, it is now at the same level. There is no such a thing that this victory gave me more confidence than it was yesterday or the day before. This victory was a relief: finally, I was able to win the prestigious tournament at home under pressure. My confidence has been at a good level lately. You never know when your week will be successful. If someone told me that I would win the tournament at home in the coming week, I would say that I will win anywhere, but not at home. You need to try to play more consistently.

Your mother and father have always been at your tournaments, but this time around  your parents haven’t been seen at you box. What is the reason for it?

It is not connected with anything. Probably not to jinx it. And then there are some superstitions. When you want to win, you do everything the same way as before. The same table, the same dinner, the same lockerg room, the same shower room. I tried once again not to think the other way.

A question about tactics. It seemed like you hit some of your shots at half of your usual power during the match and then you would accelerate all of a suddenf. How could you explain it?

It was the game style I chose for this match. Mannarino is good in defense. He uses the opponent’s speed so well. And if you play against him without speed, it’s hard for him. I tried to play until the last moment to make him doing something by himself. It’s not his style and it was beneficial to me. I kept it in my mind.

When did you feel that you definitely would win this tournament?

I felt that I could easily lose in R1. But if you win 2 matches you have chances to go further. But I realized that I could lose to these guys. When you reach the finals, there are some thoughts, but you try to control it and to think about anything else.

You already told us about superstitions. After every match you crossed yourself thanking God. You took after Novak Djokovic? The Serb also gave 1 million dollars a year to charity. Do you plan to make the same things?

I didn’t take after Djokovic. When I was 11 and I started to play tournaments, I’ve already done this (crossing himself) . It started from my childhood. It’s hard to make it another way. As to charity I don’t have plans now, but, of course, I would like to help if I have such opportunities. And I would like something to create this way. But firstly you need to play good tennis. Djokovic has already done it. And for now I spend everything I earn investing in my tennis.
