Karen Khachanov: «I missed the VTB Kremlin Cup big time!»

Karen, your home tournament the VTB Kremlin Cup where you captured the title is about to kick- off, in what state of mind will you be coming to Moscow?

It’s always so nice to come back to Moscow, to the home tournament, especially the one I managed to win in 2018. I got a lot of good memories there. Last year the VTB Kremlin Cup was cancelled due to pandemic and I missed it big time. That’s why I can’t wait to come back to Moscow.

What do you associate the home tournament with?

The Moscow tournament always associates with my first participation in Kremlin Cup: I was 17, all my relatives came, my family, my friends – everybody watched me play. It’s one of the initial tournaments in my career, which always associates with all our former tennis players who took part in the Kremlin Cup. It’s a highly prestigious tournament, one of my favorites.

How do you plan to spend your time in the capital besides participating in the VTB Kremlin Cup?

It’s a home tournament for me, and Moscow is my home. I’ll spend time with my family, will finally meet with my friends. I can’t come often to Moscow, I rarely come here and see everyone. Sure, I want to focus on the tournament, but if there is a chance and if time permits, I’d see all my nearest and dearest.

In hindsight now that subsided, what would you tell posterity about winning a silver medal in Tokyo? What caught your memory from the outside of the court?

I’ve always said that the Olympics were my priority. It’s something special, a bonus to what we have in tennis tour – the quadrennial tournament. I used to dream of playing for my country, winning a medal. It’s incredible for me, it has been my dream, at least one of them. That’s why I feel very proud, happy, and excited that I was able to do it and bring the medal for myself, for my family and my team, for the national team and all the fans.

What players from which sports have you managed to meet with and talk to? There were many shared photos with volleyball players on social media. Perhaps you wanted to watch their games.

We have met players from different countries. That’s probably one of the thing about the Olympics. It was one of the first Olympics for me and many other guys and it was a cool experience. We met volleyball players, handball players, swordsmen, beach football guys, 3x3 basketball players. All have supported us. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend other sports events. We spent most of our time at the stadium, recovering, the schedule was so intense.

Did you have any thoughts about the Olympic Games in Paris? If so, what were they?

Sure, I did. Anyway we have a couple of years till the next Olympics, but I’m sure it’s going to be a priority one for me. I’d really like to go back there, hopefully, the fans will be admitted to the Olympics by then and we will be full-blown representatives of Russia and will be able to play fully for the country. I hope it will be possible because this year, let’s be honest, it’s probably the only thing missing.

At the end of November the Russian national team will play in the Davis Cup Finals. Are you determined to help our squad to win this team trophy?

Yes, sure. The Davis Cup has also always been my top priority. This is the kind of team event we always dreamed to participate in and to try to win it, from junior times when we played in different team championships U14, U16 and U18. We dreamed of going to the Davis Cup and trying to win it since the time of our great stars, since 2006. The Davis Cup is on the calendar, and we hope we’ll all be healthy, ready and able to come and fight for victory.
