YOUR WIN TODAY TAKES YOU INTO THE WTA FINALS IN GUADALAJARA MEXICO, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?

It was a very important match – I knew that before I stepped on the court – because I knew if I won that match I would qualify. It’s achieving one of my biggest goals this year. It’s very satisfying and I’m very proud of myself, my team, that we actually made it to the Finals for the first time, and also for the first time in history for a Greek female tennis player.

IT’S BEEN A GREAT YEAR FOR YOU, I WONDER, WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS MADE THE DIFFERENCE THIS YEAR?

Obviously, after having a very rough start in Australia, being stuck in the room, it took me a little bit of time to get used to the outside world again and feeling my tennis, because it wasn’t east. But then I just changed the way I was thinking with the help of some people around in my team. They helped me to change my mindset on court and I think that was the key for me to make it.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR MINDSET CHANGED, WHAT WAS DIFFERENT?

I was very hard on myself up until this year and this season. I’m also growing and getting older and more mature, you change things and see certain things differently. But being nice to myself was one of the most important things I changed this year and being nice during the games, during the matches. [Previously] I could be very negative and very, as I mentioned, hard on myself, so I really tried to change that. I was bitching a lot on the court, like talking all the time, which didn’t help. I got to a certain point but I realised that after a certain level, you need to change things and do things differently and that’s what I did.

WE DON’T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT’S GOING TO BE LIKE IN AUSTRALIA NEXT YEAR BUT IF IT WAS THE SAME QUARANTINE ARRANGEMENTS, HOW WOULD YOU APPROACH IT DIFFERENTLY?

Well, I guess, it’s not going to be like last year. Well, that’s what I hope! We’re hearing that whoever is vaccinated and I’m vaccinated – I was double-jabbed in March so I’ll be triple jabbed by then. It going to make things easier for us so I trust that Tennis Australia will do the best they can and won’t have us quarantining in the room for two weeks. So we don’t know the rules exactly but I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be same as last year – I mean, this year!

YOU’RE GOING TO PLAY THE WINNER OF THE MATCH BETWEEN KUDERMETOVA AND HALEP IN MOSCOW. WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY, WHAT ARE YOUR HEAD-TO-HEADS WITH THESE TWO LADIES?

I played Veronika earlier this year in Montréal and we had a very tough match. She’s a very good player and she’s been having a very good year. And Simona, we’ve practiced a few times but we never played a match against each other so, in a way, I want to play her because she’s a great champion and I like to play new players and I want to feel her game. She’s a very nice girl and I think it’s going to be a very nice match but we’ll see who wins and take it from there.

YOU SAID YOU LOVE MOSCOW, THE ARCHITECTURE, THE FOOD AND EVERYTHING HERE. DO YOU HAVE ANY SIGHT, ANY PARTICULAR CURIOSITY OF MOSCOW YOU LIKE BEST? ANY PARTICULAR MEAL FROM RUSSIAN CUISINE YOU APPRECIATE THE MOST?

Beef stroganoff! It’s very nice. And the Red Square is very pretty. I didn’t have the chance last time I was here to visit more places but I really want to. The weather doesn’t help because it’s raining and it’s not easy and also I’m busy playing. I’m sure one time, maybe not this year, but a different time, I want to visit a few more places.
