Karatsev: «To reach QF at a tournament where I’ve been playing since I was 19 is something special for me»

October 21, 09:15 PM

Aslan Karatsev got off to a good start at the “VTB Kremlin Cup” beating the Belorussian Egor Gerasimov to reach the quarterfinals here for the first time ever. At a post-match presser he shared his feelings on playing at home and named his goals for the rest of the season.

Aslan, how do you rate the match?

It was difficult, the first match after a long flight(from the US), a different surface, a different court, different balls. It was difficult to get used to everything, but I managed to cope and win.

You will play your next match tomorrow. You are playing against the winner of the clash Gilles Simon vs Mackenzie McDonald. Will you have time to recover? And what kind of opponent do you expect?

I will have time to recover, I’ll practice in the afternoon, will stretch and will prepare. I don't know who my opponent will be, it's hard to say, both play very well indoors. We’ll see, I’ll be ready for both.

This is the year of Karatsev, you made a breakthrough, how did you manage to make such a huge progress?

I think the hard work I’ve been doing for so long finally paid off. After my injury I started working with another coach, it was hard work for three years, and everything worked out this year. You never know when success will come, and here it is this season, and a quite loudsuccess at that.

You are 28, you are not a rookie in tennis. When did you realize that you could compete with the best?

I have always had a decent level of tennis, this is more of a psychological moment. I just began to believe in myself more and in the work I do. This is more about psychology.

Today you are at the top of the world tennis. How has your life changed since you got there? Did people start to recognize you on the street?

It has changed a lot, I became famous in my homeland. I received  a warm welcome, I visited the head of the Republic (Northern Ossetia) recently, but people don't really recognize me in the street. Other things are as usual - I work, train, go to tournaments.

Did any kind of pressure come along with your good results? Is it harder now, after you achieved success?

No, it is not harder, on the contrary, I enjoy it. Because I do what I love.

Your goals for the rest of the season?

First, enter the Top 20, and then try to get to the ATP year-end tournament in Turin.

You made quite a transfer - from the heat in Indian Wells to the cold Moscow, there is also a huge time difference. How did you adapt?

It was tough. During the first two days I couldn't sleep properly, I woke up at 2 AM, fell asleep again at 7 AM, slept until 10 AM. My sleep was absolutely broken. On the third day I felt better, and today I feel quite all right.

You played at the VTB Kremlin Cup as a teenager, how doest it feel to come back here now?

Playing at home is a special feeling, I've been playing here since I was 19, but I never went beyond R2. So now playing here and reaching the quarterfinals is a special moment for me, my friends are rooting for me here and overall I feel good support.
