Anett Kontaveit: «Ekaterina played great, it seemed I had no chance»

October 24, 05:15 PM

Anett Kontaveit claimed the third title of the season at the “VTB Kremlin Cup”, having won a tough match against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the finals - 4/6, 6/4, 7/5. At the post-match press-conference, the Estonian player told the journalists how she managed to turn the tide and what the role of coach Dmitriy Tursunov was (he’s been working with Anette since last summer).

At some point it looked like it was almost hopeless – you were trailing 0/4 in the second set and she was playing pretty well. And then it was a complete overturn – you won like 7 games in a row, what happened?

I think she played really amazingly. I mean, I didn’t feel like I could do much when I was 4-0 down. She was just hitting the balls down the lines – she was playing amazing tennis. I was just trying to stay in there as much as I could. It is tough to keep this sort of level, she was playing great. I was just trying my best to stay in it as long as I could. I never really gave up, so I was just trying to fight for every point as much as I could. You know, if I lost 6/4, 6/2 or whatever, I would know that I have tried everything.

What helps you to calm down at tight moments and what helps you to keep concentrated?

When these moments happen, I just try to concentrate on the process and not on the score. That can be difficult, of course, sometimes. The main thing is just to try think about the process and what I have to do. And not to focus on other things that I cannot control.

Can you, please, say a couple of words about your joint work with Dmitriy Tursunov? You just started to work with him a few months ago. What did he teach you? And what did you use today in the match of what he taught you?

We only work together for such A short period of time and we were working mainly at tournaments, so it was difficult to change something or work on something specific. But we were practicing a lot during tournaments and he really taught me to be more positive with myself and believe in myself a little bit more. I think that so far it has been the key to the success that we had together. He definitely understands the game really well. He is definitely a big asset to my team.

Your main goal was to crack the Top10. Now you re ranked 20th, and after this win in Moscow you will rise again in your rankings. Maybe you want to review your goal ang change it?

When I was younger my goal was to get into the Top100. When you reach the Top100, you want more. I’m always like this. I set myself a goal, once I reach it I want to do better.

How did you get together with Dmitriy?

I was looking for a new coach quite some time. My team reached out to Dmitriy. That’s how our working together started.

Did you two set the task of breaking through to the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, Mexico?

We didn't set a ranking goal. When we started working the goal was to break the 4-5 match losing streak and start to play better. I was ready to work and learn. We started winning quickly and so far everything is going well. Guadalajara is still a long way away for me, but it’s definitely a goal.
